Your topics need to be much more specific. In other words, there are entire books written about both these topics. You need to narrow in on one specific aspect. For example, you could research Edward Bernays and find examples of his theories in present-day advertising. Another idea is to research ways in which people are fighting against the manipulation. This is supposedly a characteristic of Gen X or the millennial generation -- evidence in things like Lyft and Uber, AirBnB, "cutting the cord" of cable and satellite, etc.
